How to Play Wisp Tether

A little wisp has to cross the endless catacombs, but it cannot fly on its own. Old lanterns hang from the ceiling on long chains, and the wisp can throw a soul chain up to grab one. Hold to latch on and swing; let go to fly free and keep your speed.

The lantern your chain will grab is ringed in red, so you always know where the next swing comes from. If you are already holding when you come within reach of a lantern, the chain catches it automatically.

Two things end the run. Below you is a river of fog, and touching it swallows the wisp. Behind you, the dark creeps forward and gets a little faster the farther you go. Fall too far behind and it catches you. Every metre you travel is a point, and red souls floating in the tunnel are worth five more.

The first lanterns are close together. Farther in they spread out and hang at very different heights. Some are cracked, marked with red lines: grab one of those and it breaks a moment later, so let go quickly.

Controls

Touch

  • Press and hold anywhere to grab the ringed lantern. Lift your finger to let go and fly.

Mouse

  • Hold the mouse button to swing, release it to fling.

Keyboard

  • Hold Space, Enter or the Up arrow to swing and release it to fly. P or Escape pauses, M mutes.

Tips and Tricks

  • Let go just after the lowest point of the swing, while the wisp is moving forward and starting to rise. That throws it the farthest.
  • Letting go too late sends you upward but not forward. Letting go too early drops you toward the fog.
  • A long chain from a far lantern swings wide and fast. A short one is safer but slower.
  • Do not wait on one lantern for too long. The dark behind you never stops.
  • On cracked lanterns, take one quick half swing and release.

About the Game

Wisp Tether is a momentum game with a single button. The fun is in the swing itself: feeling the chain pull tight, picking the right moment to let go, and catching the next lantern at full speed. When it goes right, the wisp flies through the tunnel in one long smooth line.

The catacomb walls are lined with rows of quiet skulls, the lanterns flicker warm orange, and the fog below rolls in slow waves. The game is wide, so it is best on a computer or a phone turned sideways. Your farthest run is saved in this browser and can go on the Top 10 board.

Wisp Tether FAQ

Which lantern will my chain grab?

The one with the red ring around it. The game picks a lantern ahead of you within reach, a comfortable distance away.

Why does my chain get shorter on its own?

A very long chain would swing you down into the fog, so it reels itself in to a safe length. That reeling also adds a little speed.

What are the lanterns with red cracks?

Cracked lanterns. They hold you for about a second and then break, so swing once and let go.

How does Wisp Tether score a run?

One point for each metre you travel, plus five for every red soul you touch.

What happens if I just hold on forever?

The dark creeping in from the left will reach you. Keep moving forward.
