How to Play Reaper's Realm

The souls of the realm have shattered and scattered across the dark, and only one small reaper is brave enough to gather them. You start in the Moonlit Plaza, a quiet graveyard square under a huge pale moon. A stone pedestal in the middle holds fifteen empty sockets, one for every Soul Shard, and three gate stones glow at the edge of the square. Walk into a glowing gate to step through into its level.

Each level hides five Soul Shards, and every one is earned a different way: one waits at the top of a high climb, one is guarded by a mini-boss, one is the prize for winning a race against the clock, one is locked behind a small puzzle, and one is hidden where you might never think to look. Fifty red soul wisps float along paths, ledges and secret corners too. Collect them for score, and every ten you gather in one visit heals a skull.

Your health is three skulls at the top of the screen. Bumping into a skeleton, bat, ghost or spider costs one skull, and so does falling into the misty chasm, but you jump straight back in at the last lantern you lit. Light the checkpoint lanterns as you explore. Finding a Soul Shard fills all three skulls again. Your shards, wisps and best times are saved on this device, so you can leave at any time and press Continue to carry on.

Controls

Keyboard and mouse

  • WASD or the arrow keys move. Space jumps; press it again in the air to double jump. Hold it longer to jump higher.
  • Jump while you slide down a tall wall to kick off it, and keep pushing into a ledge to grab and climb it.
  • Shift or C in the air does a ground-pound. Jump right after landing one for a higher bounce.
  • F, J or a mouse click does the scythe spin.
  • Click the game once and the mouse turns the camera. Q and E also turn it, and R puts it back behind you. You can set the arrow keys to turn the camera instead in Settings.
  • P or Escape pauses and M mutes.

Gamepad

  • The left stick moves and the right stick turns the camera.
  • A jumps, X or Y spins, and B or the left trigger ground-pounds.
  • The right bumper recenters the camera and Start pauses.

Touch

  • Turn your phone sideways. Touch anywhere on the left half of the game and drag to move with the floating stick.
  • Tap JUMP, SPIN and DOWN on the right. Swipe the empty right half of the screen to turn the camera, and tap the round arrow button to put it behind you.
  • The game blocks page scrolling and zooming while you play, and the fullscreen button gives you the most room.

Levels and Collectibles

The realm is split into three levels, each behind its own gate in the Moonlit Plaza. The Haunted Graveyard is open from the start, the Cursed Clocktower gate opens with 3 Soul Shards and the Crypt of Lanterns gate opens with 7. Deep in the crypt, a last gate needs 10 shards, and behind it waits the Grave Warden, the master of the realm.

Haunted Graveyard

Two fields of crooked tombstones split by a misty chasm. Climb the spiral ledges of the old bell tower, light four braziers before any burns out to open a crypt, race from the obelisk to the red beam before the bell, wake the Bone Brute in its ring of fence posts, and look for a cracked slab that sounds hollow.

Cursed Clocktower

A purple dusk over a courtyard of gears and gravestones. Spiral up the outside of the clock tower over ticking clock blocks, a rising lift, swinging pendulums and crumbling slabs to reach the belfry. Fly through eight clock rings against the clock, play back the tune of the four bells, outlast the Tick-Tock Phantom, and peek over the edge of the courtyard where the low wall has a gap.

Crypt of Lanterns

A deep cavern lit by lanterns, where spiders hang from old beams and ghosts drift through walls. Ride two lifts up to the great lantern, race across slabs that crumble under your feet, light four lanterns that flip each other, trick the Spider Queen into the stone pillars, and find the crypt whose back wall is not what it seems.

The Grave Warden

The final boss. It sends rings of soul orbs rolling along the floor and leaps to slam the ground. After two attacks it sets its lantern down to rest. Strike the lantern three times to free the realm.

Soul Shards

Five per level and fifteen in all. Each shard is worth 1000 points, fills your skulls and lights a socket on the plaza pedestal.

Red soul wisps

Fifty per level, worth 10 points each. They mark the safe path, hide on high ledges and circle the boss rings.

Score

Your Top 10 score is 1000 for every Soul Shard, 10 for every wisp, a speed bonus for each level where you gather all five shards in one visit, and 3000 for defeating the Grave Warden. It is sent when you return to the plaza, or beat the Warden, with a higher score than before.

Tips and Tricks

  • Use the double jump to correct a bad jump, not just to go higher. Save it until you can see where you will land.
  • The narrow gap between two tall crypt walls is made for wall jumping. Jump, slide on one wall, then jump again to kick across to the other.
  • Skeleton hoppers can be stomped from above, but a scythe spin is safer when they are close. Bats swoop when you get near, so spin as they dive.
  • The Bone Brute cannot be hurt while it is angry. Jump over each shockwave ring, and after its third slam it gets dizzy. That is your moment.
  • In the race, take the stepping stones across the chasm, not the long way round. A smooth line beats fast panicked jumps.
  • A ground-pound breaks things that a jump will not. If a slab looks cracked, try pounding it.
  • Clock blocks take turns being solid. Both sets are solid for a moment at every tick, so jump as the one you are on starts to blink.
  • Ghosts drift through walls but a scythe spin sends them away. Spiders drop when you walk under their beam, so step back, then stomp them.
  • The Spider Queen charges in a straight line. Stand just in front of a stone pillar and step aside when she runs.
  • Lost the camera? Press R, the right bumper or the round arrow button to swing it straight back behind your reaper.

About the Game

Reaper's Realm is a free 3D platformer from the Reaper Man Arcade that runs right in your web browser, with no download and no sign-up. It is a cute-creepy adventure starring a small hooded reaper in black and red, with glowing eyes and a scythe almost as tall as it is. It is spooky rather than scary: moonlight, mist, flickering lanterns and bony enemies that burst into puffs of dust, with no gore and no flashing lights.

Everything you see and hear is made in code, from the low-poly graveyard to the sound effects and the quiet music, so the whole game is a small download that starts fast. It runs smoothly on most laptops, desktops and phones, lowers its own detail on slower devices, and pauses itself when you switch tabs. The arcade playlist plays alongside it, and you can turn the game's own music down or off in Settings.

Reaper's Realm FAQ

Is Reaper's Realm free?

Yes. Reaper's Realm is free to play in your web browser with no download and no sign-up.

Can I play Reaper's Realm on my phone?

Yes. Turn your phone sideways and use the on-screen stick to move, with JUMP, SPIN and DOWN buttons on the right. Swipe the right side of the screen to turn the camera.

Does it work with a game controller?

Yes. Most standard USB and Bluetooth controllers work. The left stick moves, the right stick turns the camera and A jumps.

Is my progress saved?

Your Soul Shards, wisps, best race time and settings are saved in your browser on this device. Press Continue to carry on, or use Erase saved progress in Settings to start again.

How many levels are there?

Three: the Haunted Graveyard, the Cursed Clocktower and the Crypt of Lanterns, joined by the Moonlit Plaza. Each has five Soul Shards and fifty wisps, and the final boss waits at the end of the Crypt of Lanterns.

How do I reach the final boss?

Gather 10 Soul Shards, then go to the far end of the Crypt of Lanterns. The Warden's gate opens by itself once you have enough shards.

What if my browser cannot show 3D?

The game needs WebGL, which almost every modern browser has. If yours has it turned off, the game shows a short message instead of a blank screen. Turning on hardware acceleration in your browser settings usually fixes it.
