How to Play Swamp Lights
Night falls over the swamp and fireflies drift down from the dead trees. You hold a glass jar at the water's edge. Slide it under the fireflies to catch them, but only the ones that match the colour your jar is glowing.
There are three colours, and each has its own shape: green fireflies are round, gold ones are diamonds and violet ones are stars. Your jar shows its colour and shape on the front, and the little key in the corner shows all three. Tap to change your jar to the next colour.
Fireflies come in runs of one colour, with the odd stray mixed in. Catching a firefly of the wrong colour costs a heart. So does catching a grey swamp-gas bubble; they start drifting down after a few seconds. You have three hearts.
Every catch scores. Catch five in a row for a times two multiplier, ten for times three, up to times five. Letting a firefly of your colour fall into the water resets the combo. The swarm gets thicker and faster as the night goes on.
Controls
Touch
- Drag anywhere to slide the jar left and right. A quick tap changes its colour.
Mouse
- Drag with the button held to slide, click to change colour.
Keyboard
- Left and Right arrows or A and D slide the jar. Space, Up or W changes colour, and 1, 2 or 3 pick green, gold or violet. P or Escape pauses, M mutes.
Tips and Tricks
- Change colour as soon as you see a run of a new colour coming, not when it is already at the jar.
- If a wrong-colour firefly is about to land in the jar, slide away instead of switching colour.
- Gas bubbles wobble slowly. Give them a wide berth.
- A big combo is worth more than any single catch. Skip a risky firefly rather than lose a heart.
About the Game
Swamp Lights is a catching game with one twist: the jar's colour. You are always doing two things at once, moving and matching, and it gets busy fast in a fun way.
The swamp glows with soft green, gold and violet light over dark water, reeds and dead trees under a pale moon. Every colour also has a different shape, so the game works for colour-blind players too. It plays upright on phones. Your best score is saved in this browser and can go on the Top 10 board.

Can I play Swamp Lights if I am colour-blind?
Yes. Each colour has its own shape: circle for green, diamond for gold and star for violet. The jar shows the same shape.
What happens if I miss a firefly?
Missing one of your jar's colour resets the combo, but it does not cost a heart.

Tap or click without dragging, or press Space. On a keyboard, 1, 2 and 3 jump straight to green, gold or violet.
