Spirit Sort
Play Spirit Sort free online. Pour coloured spirits between apothecary jars until every jar holds one colour, across ten shelves that are always solvable.
How to Play Spirit Sort
An apothecary kept captured spirits in glass jars, four portions to a jar, until somebody knocked the shelf and everything got mixed. Your job is to sort them out so every jar ends up holding a single colour, or nothing at all.
Tap a jar to lift it, then tap another jar to pour. Only the top colour moves, and it can only land on top of the same colour or in an empty jar. If several portions of that colour sit together on top, as many as fit pour across at once. A jar holds four portions, never more.
When the last jar is sorted, the shelf is done and the next one appears. There are ten shelves in a game. The first has three colours and the last has eight, with two empty jars to work with on every shelf.
Each shelf shows a target number of moves. Finishing at or under it earns the most points, and every extra move takes a few away, though a finished shelf always scores something. Undo takes back a pour but still counts as a move. Restart puts the shelf back the way it started.
Controls
Touch
- Tap the jar to pour from, then the jar to pour into. Tap the same jar again to put it down. Undo and Restart are at the bottom.
Mouse
- Click a jar, then click where it should go.
Keyboard
- Left and Right (and Up and Down on two-row shelves) move the red arrow between jars. Space or Enter lifts and pours. U or Backspace undoes, R restarts the shelf. P pauses, M mutes.
Tips and Tricks
- Keep one jar empty as long as you can. An empty jar is your best tool, and filling both too early can trap you.
- Look for colours that are already sitting on top of each other in different jars and join them first.
- Before pouring, ask what the move uncovers. The best pours reveal a colour you can use right away.
- If the game says no pours are left, undo two or three moves rather than restarting the whole shelf.
- Every colour also has a symbol, such as a dot, a cross or a triangle. Use the symbols if two shades look alike to you.
About the Game
Spirit Sort is a calm logic puzzle with no clock. Every shelf is made at random and then checked by a solver before you see it, so every one of them can be finished. Take as long as you like; the only pressure is the move target, if you want it.
The jars glow against a dim, cobwebbed shop wall, and each pour makes a soft trickling sound. It works on a phone, a tablet or a computer. Your best total for all ten shelves is saved in this browser and can go on the Top 10 board.
Spirit Sort FAQ
Can every shelf be solved?
Yes. Each shelf is checked by a solver before the game shows it to you. If you get stuck, undo a few moves and try a different order.
Is there a clock on each shelf?
No. Spirit Sort is untimed. Points come from finishing each shelf close to its target number of moves.
What do the symbols on the colours mean?
They are a second way to tell the colours apart. Each colour always carries the same symbol.
Does Undo cost anything?
It counts as a move, so it can lower that shelf's score a little. There is no limit to how many times you use it.
How many shelves are there?
Ten per game, growing from three colours to eight. Your score is the total for all ten.
