How to Play Crypt Crawl
Lost souls are trapped in the crypt, and you are the only reaper brave enough to fetch them. Walk the dark stone corridors by lantern light, collect every glowing soul on the level, then reach the crypt gate, which glows red and opens once the last soul is gathered.
Ghosts wander the halls, and each one has a visible cone of sight. Walls block it, but if you step inside it the ghost's eyes turn red and it gives chase. A ghost's touch costs one of your three lives and sends you back to the start, though the souls you already gathered stay gathered.
Your lantern is both your friend and your giveaway. Snuff it out and the ghosts' sight shrinks a lot, but you creep along more slowly. Light it again and you run faster than any ghost. Each soul is worth 50 points. Clearing a level adds 100 times the level number, a time bonus for a fast escape and 150 more if no ghost ever spotted you.
Controls
Touch
- Swipe on the game to walk that way. The reaper keeps going until a wall, and you can keep dragging to steer.
- Tap once to stop.
- Or hold the round arrow pad in the bottom-left corner, and tap the lantern button in the bottom-right corner to snuff or relight it.
Mouse
- Click and hold the arrow pad to walk, or drag across the game like a swipe.
- Click the lantern button to snuff or relight the lantern.
Keyboard
- Arrow keys or W, A, S and D walk while held. Press a direction early to turn at the next opening.
- Space or L snuffs or relights the lantern.
- P or Escape pauses, and M mutes.
Tips and Tricks
- Watch the cones. Slip behind a ghost or cross its corridor while it faces away, and use walls to break its line of sight.
- Snuff the lantern to sneak, but relight it to run. You creep slower than a chasing ghost in the dark.
- Dead ends marked with a stone tomb are safe. Ghosts can't enter them, and with your lantern snuffed inside one the hunter loses you.
- Use the loops in the maze to circle away from a chaser. With your lantern lit you are faster than any ghost.
- Follow the glowing dots on the edge of the screen to find the last souls, and the red arrow to find the gate.
About the Game
Crypt Crawl is a free stealth maze game from the Reaper Man Arcade. Every level is a fresh crypt built from a new maze, so no two runs play the same way. It is spooky rather than scary: the ghosts glow softly in the dark, there are no jump-scares, and getting caught just sends you back to the entrance for another try.
Mazes grow larger and ghosts grow more numerous and quicker as you go deeper, up to eight ghosts on the biggest levels. The game plays in any modern browser on a phone, tablet or computer with nothing to install, saves your best score on your device and lets you post each finished run to the global Top 10.
